This is not a hib, it's a desert rose, I have way more seeds than I can plant, I learned how to make them produce seed now there popping out of the plants every were, while I was out today 12 pods opened and flew away. I still have quite a few that I don't think I'll be planting and their live spam is quit short so I want to give them out for free to my hibs friends, if any of you are interested please D-mail me with your mailing address so I can send them to you. Rather give them away than to loose them or throw out, only seeds that is.

These are what the long pods look like and they sometime have almost 50 seeds in them.

Hi Wilfred,
you said: "I learned how to make them produce seed". I have never had a seed pod on my desert rose before and would like to hear about your technique. I like your seedling pictures, thanks for sharing them...

Dave, yes I did learn how to, it took me 7 year do do it but I finally nailed it and believe me you don't know how easy it is when you got the right tools to do it, I couldn't believe it my self at the beginning, now its just routine, when ever I want more seed I just pollinate a few flower with a certain type of artist paint brush and in a couple of day after the flowers have fallen I know if the pods are developing. Somebody else ask for seed, do you want some, send me a d-mail so I can explain to you how I do it, this is not the forum for this, but I'll be glad to explain to you how I do it by D-mail, tomorrow I will take some photos step by step to help you get your plants to produce seed pods.

Nice Wilfred..

I like stessed out beauty..

I have a desert rose but the buds keep dropping on it . I guess I give it less attention than the hibs.

Carolina, PR(Zone 11)

Thanks Pac and Robert, Would any of you happen to know the true name of the stressed out beauty, I would love to give her her rightful name.

Hey Pac, maybe its the fertilizer your using, unlike the hibs, desert rose need a lot of phosphorus, I use MG super bloomer on mien and from time to time I'll feed it with a 20-20-20 fertilizer, the only thing there the same is in the soil types, good drainage and not to dry or to wet, ether way will cause bud dropping off ,asides the risk of root rot ether way also.

Thanks for the info Wilfred. I will give it some more attention. The bloom on it looks great. The one I have is called Arrogant. I put a pic up in the plant files last year. How often do you prune yours ?

Carolina, PR(Zone 11)

pacsona, that depends on how do you want it to look like, if your looking for the bonsai look or the more wild look, ether way it looks great, If you cut them more often they tend to be more full and short like a bonsai and if you hardly cut them the look more like the one you would see in a wild desert. I have one that has been with me for 20 years now and I've never cut it, It' has the wild look, 5 feet tall but not as full. I would trim them around every 6 month since they are slow grower If I wanted the more bonsai look, keep in mind the thickness of the base and truck for this purpose, go to plant file and check some of the photos the have on desert roses, you might get some good ideas from them. Oh! before I forget, you won't have any flowers for a wile every time you trim them, part of the sacrifices you have to accept to get the shape your looking for just like the hibs but well worth it.

by the way, do you want any seed I'm giving out.

Wilfred

Thanks for the info and offer Wilfred. I'm gonna go ahead and chop away with it.. Thank you for the offer for seed but I think I'm going to stick with the one I have and see if I can get the bush and trunk to look like some of the pics I've seen.

Best regards,

Jon

Nice blooms Wilfred. My fav is Curly Top.

I have my first seed pod ever on an adenium but my pod is not as long as yours. Will the pod darken? When do I harvest the seed? Do I harvest when the pod starts to crack and open.

Here is a video from Buried Treasures on how to prune an adenium. I tried it and it really helps increasing blooms and making a fuller plant. I know I read something on the best time to do it but I can't remember when that is. Maybe Wilfred can give some input on that.

Jon, There's a little trick in getting the trunk to look that way, what they do is that they pull out the whole plant without disturbing the root ball out of the pot, soil and all and then add 1/2" to 1" at the bottom of the pot, replant the whole plant in the pot and remove the top 1/2" to 1" of soil from the top. what this does is that the plant will produce more fat roots further down while exposing more of it at the top, after time goes by, the exposed root will then look like part of the trunk. They do this every two month but I think that would varies from place to place and climate and growth rate. Check you tube under adenium, lot of info.

Patty, some pods do darken a little more than others and some get bigger than other, and as soon as you see the pod start to crack open take it or you'll loose your seeds to the wind, if your not able to be there to grab them, just tie a trash bag tie around the pod so it won't open until you get them, while your away. Best time to prune would be when the plant starts to get active, spring time. This plant also produces more flower with more sun exposure, but should be done gradually, if plant was in a shady area and expose all of a sudden to the suns ray, all the leaves will fall off and new one will start to grow harder and smaller to handle the sunlight, also recommend to use MG super bloomer fertilizer on it for more blooms, the more flower it produces the faster it depletes the phosphorus it has in the soil, you'll know when leaves turn rusty reddish color. one in a while flush pot with plenty of water to get rid of the excess salt buildup that happens with these types of fertilizers.

Any more info. needed on adenium that I can give I will, but please D-mail me rather than on this forum that is dedicated for hibs and hib lovers.

Wilfred, thanks so much for adding me to your list for the Desert Rose seeds, they're very cool. I've never tried to grow one before, so I'm excited to get to try.

Curly top is very nice & I love the colors on Orange Marmalade & Shine On Twinkle Twinkle. What else you got up your sleeve out there? very nice.

Los Angeles, CA(Zone 10b)

Thanks for all the info Wilfred.

I have cut it back and started the lifting process to get the exposed roots. Hopefully I didn't stress it out to much but I think it will be ok.
