Couple In Bloom

The first one, I was told is Anthurium Fasto marandae. It's been here about 10 months, so it must like it here.

Anybody's guess on this.

I have two of those. I grow one like you have that one, in a basket (in fact almost looks like my basket you have there, LOL) and another in the ground. I have found in makes no diff to the plant as to the technique, both my plants are absolutely huge. I love this plant.

Hi,

I have them in baskets because I have such terrible drainage there. There are two down-spouts that are starting to go into high gear with the rains that we have had. I have amended the soil but it has not done too much. Plus, with them hanging, there can be more plants put under. See, there is a method to my madness. LOL

Antherium is one of my favorites and I would love to be able to propagate it. You have the real big beauties that we see in movies and some floral displays. I have the small variety but it is gettting bigger and bigger. It is only two years old and blooms all the time in my bird room.. Do you have any idea how to propagate your variety? JB
Here is my teeny weeny compared to yours.

JBerger,
your plant is an Anthurium andreanum. Its an Anthurium but a different species than the A. faustominandae. Your plant is the one usually used in floral displays. A species plant like A. fausto would almost never be used in that application.

Most of the species Anthuriums like A. fausto are propagated either by seed or by division. Some are tissue cultured.

Boy, you got me off the hook there, gothqueen. I wouldn't know how to start other then just cutting off the dead flowers. Even that is probably wrong.

Thank you Gothqueen. I really thought mine were to small to be used in floral arrangements. I remember getting them from my husband for Valentines Day and they were three times bigger than my little ones. Do you know anyone who specializes in Antherium and would have different varieties? I want to learn more about them.
Yours are wonderful. What a giant plant that is.

I do not know where to get the seeds, do you know anyone who has any? JB

There are many many different cultivars of Anthurium andreanum grown specifically for the cut flower/florist trade. All different colors, all different sizes. All you have to do is google to see tons of pics. Most originate in Hawaii, its one of their hugest industries.

The difference between your plant and other different types of species Anthuriums is that almost all of the species that are not Anthurium andreanum (you can go to www.aroid.org and see the list of species with photos) have usually white or other blase color flowers that would not be suitable for the florist trade. Some have dark or black flowers but they are not "showy" enough to be used in floral arranging. Species plants like the one above are generally grown by collectors for the foliage, or used in the landscape by folks lucky enough to live somewhere like Miami where they can plant them outdoors year round.

Some of my different species plants have set seeds before and I have grown some plants from them. I know that folks like Lari Ann and Brian WIlliams also grow plants from seeds and even do their own pollination and hybridizing. I just take what forms, I am not into trying to make new plants.

Does anyone want my flowers?
