I have several cucumber plants that I planted from seeds, and they are growing nicely. They have produced a lot of flowers, but so far nothing that looks like a cucumber. I'm fairly new to gardening, so I did a little research online, and read about taking a small brush to each blossom to help pollinate it. I do this faithfully every morning, back and forth, several times, but so far, nothing. Any suggestions on what I should do or am doing wrong? I've never seen a bee here, so I don't know what is attracted to the flower. Of course, they were covered with green worms a couple of days ago, but Sevin dust seemed to take care of them. My God, they can eat!! Anyway, thanks for your help.
Question about cucumber plants
Cukes always seem to produce only male flowers until the plants decide they're large enough to make babies. Cool weather also seems to retard the female flower production. Are you in the mountains and still a bit cool? At the other extreme, excessive heat degrades the pollen so they won't perform in mid-summer in many areas.
Farmer dill showed me a picture of the male and female flowers, and the female will have a tiny cucumber between the vine and the flower.
I'll try and find a picture
Thanks for all the input. No, I'm not in the mountains (don't I wish this time of year!). I'm on the Pacific coast - very hot and humid now. Maybe the plants just aren't big enough yet. I'll try to be patient.
And thanks for the photo.
