My dh is going to buid nesting boxes for out three silkies, one rooster and two hens.I need some pictures of what you have for your silkies to nest in and to go into at night to keep warm.I need any info you can share with me for what you use.Do they need to be floor level as silkies can`t fly?He wanted to build just one so they can all be togather because right now they huddle togather at night in a corner. But the hens will go broodie sometime I asume and that would not work. If you have any other info please share it with me as this is our first time having silkies. How big should the boxes be?
Pictures of silkie nesting box please
All of my Silkies have liked to roost about 6 to 10 inches above the ground.. I think they are always more comfortable near the ground--and most chickens like to brood on the ground if given the option. It makes it easier when the chicks hatch.
Ours have nest boxes that are about 12X12 or 14x14 something like that and about 4 inches off the ground.
My silkies use a wine box in the corner of their coop. It has hatched out dozens and dozens! I put straw in the bottom and when they squish it down to a nest shape, I sprinkle shavings inside to absorb and broken egg. I like the box, because they can raise up over the side to poop and I can clean around it. One of my other silkies insists on nesting under a little stool I keep tucked in the fawn pen. She feels perfectly safe there from every one else, including the fawns. It must work, she just hatched 11 this week and 13 in the middle of february.
