Only dog adjusting to Only cat

Medina, OH

My 93 year old mother has a three year old cat. They live in an apartment and the cat is indoors only, but has all claws. We have a three year old Plott Hound who rules the roost. Eventually Posy the cat will come here to live and I would like some advice on helping Amos adjust to her. We have had dogs and cats together in the past-but the cats have already been here when the puppies were introduced. Amos will chase anything that runs, but don't think he would ever hurt anything he caught. After adjusting to each other, Posy will be allowed outside. We live in the country and the house is way back from the road. Want to avoid a recreation of the "Gingham dog and Calico cat" if possible. Thanks for any advice. Susan
