Beginner Gardening: Strange growth under tomato plants, 1 by AmyInNH

I'm an amateur at this vegetable growing. Last year, zucchinis, coming out my ears! This year I got paste tomatoes and had again, too much! So the plants took off and clueless that I am were sprawled on the ground before I could tie them up. After a cold snap took out all the main branches, I trimmed them back to little nubs that had new growth on it. But under it all I found these strange little cylinders. My yard is on the wild side, never saw anything like this before. The tomato planting area was dug up, mixed with Espoma and composted cow manure. Any guesses what this might be? Thanks for any information you might have.
