American Painted Ladies, Vanessa virginiensis -- about eight of them for every Red Admiral (Vanessa atalanta) -- and possibly one or two worldwide Painted Ladies, V. cardui. V. virginiensis almost always has a white spot in one of the orange segments near the apex of each forewing; V. cardui never does. They were wild about my wallflowers, espectially the big "Sweet Sorbet".
