Now I just went outside (in the dark!) and plucked another one - can't smell a thing! Maybe it's one of those flowers that release its fragrance as it warms up in the daytime?

Here's my purple firespike with two huge bloom stems going. Don't despair of it yet, it gets better and better. If it keeps going this way, it will be a very showy plant by the summer.
