Beginner Gardening: Need suggestions for a curbside area, 1 by LouisianaSweetPea

This area is under an ugly old pine tree which drops its cones all over the place. One day (dream), I'd like to have the pine removed and replaced with a crepe myrtle.

Anyway, do you have any ideas for something suitable for this area (besides concrete) that would look neat and attractive? :D
