I don't think that's an indication that anything bad has befallen him, more that the female just wouldn't accept him back after his prolonged absence. He didn't have any identifying features, so it will be next to impossible to tell if he is allowed to return at the end of this season or if she pairs up with another male. Poor lad. Both chicks from the other nest have fledged. It's a much better site for seeing them in flight as there are large areas of open sky and the area is much more accessible to intrepid photographers, the opposite to "our" site, which is fast becoming more closed in because of vegetation.
