They're Varanus species. The biggest one I've seen was just about 3 metres long. Got a photo but on film. Didn't have a digital camera then. I was trying to get a photo of a bird, Plains Turkey, when I heard a loud hiss. Turned and saw this massive lizard close by. He was hissing to warn me to keep my distance. They haunch their shoulders and neck and stretch up on their forelegs. A really impressive sight. The biggest I've seen on my place would have only been a bit under 2 metres. But there is a 3 metre crocodile that hangs around on my place during the wet season. And they're not particularly fussy eaters at all. They'll eat cats, dogs, lizards, and even the occasional person.
