Two weeks ago we traveled the last of our summer short trips to Newport, Rhode Island. Got to visit a couple of the many mansions of the former rich and famous there. This is the "Breakers Mansion" off Bellvue Ave on the coastline previously owned by Cornelius Vanderbilt. He was a shipping and transportation tycoon mostly into the NY Central Railroad. His "summer" home in RI was built in the 1890's. Had 70 rooms on 4 floors on 11 oceanfront acres, maintained by 40 house and grounds servants. The interior was just stunning. We took a fabulous 2 hour tour just to get through the place, hard to beleive the lifestyle they had. The children's playhouse was bigger than my cape cod house.
