Please excuse my digressing ... but the teacher in me cannot resist telling you a little about the history of Morrisville, PA. Morrisville is named after Robert Morris, an American statesman, signer of the Declaration of Independence and financier of the Revolutionary War. So dedicated to the fight for independence, Morris, known to be one of the wealthiest men in the country, financed Washington's army to the point of his own bankruptcy. Later Morris partitioned congress to make what is now Morrisville, capital of the United States. After some political maneuvering by Alexander Hamilton, Morrisville lost by two votes. He and Benjamin Franklin paid a visit to Betsy Ross to commission our country’s first flag (the stars and stripes). In 1789, President George Washington appointed Morris Secretary of the Treasury, but he declined the office and suggested Alexander Hamilton instead. He never recovered the wealth that he enjoyed before the revolution. He died in 1806, in relative poverty, at the age of 73. Pictured is the Elephant Ear planted about the middle of June. I should start keeping a journal of my gardening and plant endeavors. I just detest record keeping. That and lesson plans are things I do not miss in respect to teaching. My daughter,Lisa, who teaches pre-k purchased the bulb for me to grow. She thinks her youngsters will be amazed at how large some leaves can get. |
