Today I received a double treat. I have been struggling recently with Possums and Grackles. One steals my feeders and the other scares the remaining birds off. But since the human brain is supposedly larger than a birds, I tried to make that work for me today. I bought additional baffles, and I created my version of a white trash scarecrow. One thing I have noted is that Grackles DO NOT like people. So I hung a t-shirt on a hanger, with some leggings underneath, and put it near my feeder. It seemed to work. I was enjoying watching all my regular birds outside my kitchen window - Thrashers, Cardinals, Downy WPs, and Chickadees - when I noticed the Pileated on the tree directly in front of me. WOW. A pair has been around my yard for the past week, but never in front of my kitchen window! I grabbed my camera and ran outside - it was the female.
