We use to use a gun to start them, but after one committee member (Not the guy in the Picture) put a hole in the committee boat's Bimini top, we switched to a horn start. Fun especially when we do the some big races, like starting the 12 meter boats, then it is amazing as they sail by so close on the start that you could shake the captain's hand. So I am game to have a race starting Rocky Wha vs Gimpy Victor in the first annual Garden State Snake Race held anywhere.
