Hack, I used the 1.4x converter and auto-focus the whole time and I had the camera on continuous shooting mode which I always use for bird's in flight or trying to capture some action. When using a high ISO to obtain some shutter speed I also set my ISO noise reduction to strong...(this slows down your continuous shot's) but you can get off a few before the slowdown.
