I also have the 400mm f5.6, but mine auto-focuses with the 1.4 converter...Tamron-F AF1 MC4 it may jog a lil sometimes but not enough for it to be too bothersome...however you can tell the difference in the lighting...compared to just the 400mm by itself. Here's a couple shots with the converter attached.

First is a Green Heron....it was hazy that day, the bird was about 75ft away.
