Soon after, a Coopers Hawk nailed one right outside the living room window - first time I've ever seen that by our home. I'm attaching his photo of it - stunning, like all of Nature, but very sad and not for weak stomachs. My Japanese friend, with limited English, said very astutely, "I do not think these are Mourning Doves; I think these are Suicide Doves." Wondering the same thing, I've since learned that these sweet, loving critters are well-known for being dangerously slow on their escape skills. Maybe their preoccupation with love? or mourning? (sad smile)
