After reading today's article by Deb Magnes on the Ruby-Crowned Kinglet I thought I'd share my experience of a few weeks ago. We have had a few extra cold winter nights here in North Florida this year. I pulled into the garage after dark one evening when the temperatures were predicted to be going down to 28 degrees. I spotted a tiny little bird, with his beak pressed into the corner of the garage, he seemed to be shivering. I didn't want to stress him so I closed the garage door and left him for the night vowing I would get up before the sun to make sure to let him out. When I finally escaped from my warm bed the next morning I spied the ruby-crowned kinglet feasting on all the little spiders sharing the garage.
