Just skimming through the book, I'm wondering if it could be a Pie-billed Grebe. This bird was on Lake Worth in the marshy area of the Fort Worth Nature Refuge in North Texas. It was diving near the side of a canal. It would dive and stay under for quite a while, then come up in a different area. Catch it's breath then dive again.
