The Sandhill Cranes let me get so close ... I stopped when I got within a foot or two because they are so large and I didn't want to encroach too much into their space and take a chance on getting snapped at but they sure didn't seem frightened by my presence at all. The location was at a friends home on the river. We see them all the time when we visit our friends at their townhouse complex. There's a sand/shell pathway that meanders around through the complex and along a lake and the river. These two would walk a little ways, stop and preen a bit, then walk a little farther and stop and preen some more. One walked up to someone's window and stood there for the longest time looking at it's reflection in the window!

This one I thought was really funny looking ... it had it's neck stretched around preening it's back, and looks to be posing for the camera.
