Koa trees start out with bipinnate leaves like many other common Legume trees. As they mature they lose the true leaves and the petiole expands acting as a leaf. This gives the tree the ability to photosynthesize and yet hold up to high winds, battering rainfall, and other factors that they must deal with in their pristine, but often harsh environment.
