Shade Gardening: Might need some information, 1 by wormfood

I'm losing the Zebra plant which was doing SO well. I cannot lose the Mamie philo... I also have some root (from somewhere) that's taken over the dirt. It's hard to cut thru but is only an inch or two thick. It may be smothering the plant roots. Anyone have this problem?
