I'm with you Janet. My last 3 projects were done with corrugate and newspaper put down over the grass and, in our case, since we have clay and slate soil, we had a load of amended topsoil dropped on the areas that we wanted for garden beds.

The last one that we did started like this with paper put down and soil dumped on top just leaving a path to the bilco door (to have access to basement). This area really was an eyesore when in the back yard.
