Onewish the variegated phlox is neat, I think that will be a nice change. More interest besides just in spring, it always seems to me that the further from the wild plants get, the less vigorous they are. I am having a hard time getting a white form of Maltese Cross to get bigger than 2" tall. Nothing like the straight species! They grew like mad! : ) You are so lucky that you will soon have a gh! I am envious : ) BTW is that penstemon a Cobaea or Grandiflorus? I threw some seeds down and had a few come up and they look similar to yours. Mine are on there third year and finally look like they will bloom in a couple weeks or so.
