Orange Barred Sulphurs- well, the male has the orange bars across his forewings and orange at the junction of the hindwings. The female only has the orange on her hindwings, but she has black spots along the edges of the forewings and the bottom of the hindwings. Speaking of pics - Mom got an awesome one yesterday. So awesome she emailed it to me at work. Now, while I love the Zebra Swallowtails, I have a passion for the Red Spotted Purple. Maybe just because we're at the edge of their range and I've only ever seen one in Florida (and one in KY on vacation). Last fall, I had an old, raggedy one literally land on my front door. I planted a cherry tree and hoped for the best (I have oaks and hawthornes for backup). Then, Mom sends me this picture of a Red Spotted Purple, and tonight when I came home it was on the porterweed right in front of my car! I am on egg patrol every night now.
