I do have one friend who has a high density koi pond and she put a plastic grate over the top of her lotus pot. The holes in the grate are are large enough to let the beginning leaves come through it. The grate was light weight and would not hurt spawning koi. Koi just love to bang into things while they are spawning and can get booboos and pretty torn up.

The lotus I've grown all do better with fertilizer tabs. You can get those from Texas Water Lilies or if you have a nursery that sells aquatic plants near you they might carry them.
