Shirley, you can grow the Hens and Chicks outside! Chantell's right, when the "hens" bloom, it's their last hurrah - but then the "chicks" take over where Mother Hen left off :) Most of them are hardy to Zone 3 or 4, although there are few that aren't as hardy. You shouldn't have any problem. The only thing they don't like is moist soil, they like it lean and mean :)
