Barley straw is supposed to help reduce string algae that is why we started using them in the first place and we saw a big difference with this method. We start with new ones in the Spring and change them about halfway thru the summer. I don't know if this would work for your pond but it works very good for us. We don't have a lot of water surface and with the waterlilies a lot of what we do have ends up covered.
