For one thing, the pot's shape hugs the downspout pretty well, because it's curved to accept the shape of the downspout. It's not a round pot, it's more kidney-shaped or subtly crescent-mooned shape, I guess. So you can push it up against the downspout and the soft plastic sort of grabs onto the downspout. And then of course there is the strap. And third, when attached, it is slanted a bit so that the pot's bottom pushes against the downspout, to prevent slipping.
