Once you have a coop and run that you want to teach them that this is their home. You'll probably have better luck confining them to it for a few days (some will say two days is fine, others may say upwards of a week or more is necessary). Chickens are very routine oriented, so once they have been confined for a few days they will reprogram and think of the new space as their home. Keep in mind that if they are laying when you do this, they may stop for a bit while they adjust.
