Have you considered wood chips for keeping weeds down in your veggie garden paths? You can often get them for free from the roadside wood chipper trucks. They want a place to dump them. There must be some good sawdust coming out of that old stump too. I put a double layer of cardboard, and then an inch or so of wood chips, and it works pretty well for quite a while. I think the rubber can be kind of pricey, and maybe not smell so good. Here's a pic of my paths chipped early this Summer, and hardly a weed came up to bother me.
