Hi, I don't know about Cal. but here in Illinois we have to wait for the first god frost to kill the leaves and the cut off the stalks and dig the rizomes, wash and dry them and store either in sawdust or shredded paper for the winter. I have just left mine in a basket with nothing and they have been alright the next spring but they have to be good and dry. We do the same with caladiums and EEs. hope this helps.
