I am near your zone and we had a frost the end of may thatfroze off the opening tips of the Hydrangea branches,especially the ones at the top of the bush.
I had no blooms there.
The blooms were at the bottom of the plant and deep in so they were hardly noticible.
This pic was taken in July. You can see the blooms deep in the bush and at the bottom.No blooms on top.
This is a three bush clump that is 20 years old.
