I think that, once you study the differences in the flowers -- the petal shape, the overlap, the size, the striping, the color patterns -- you start to recognize the characteristics after a while, and they jump out at you over time. That being said, it is still very difficult to put a name to a cultivar from a picture, and there can be subtle and not-so-subtle differences that can affect the appearance of flowers of the same cultivars in different climates and different growing conditions. 'California Sunset' looks like 'Penang Peach' to me, but seedlings can often look like one of their parents, and there might be differences that I can't see from pictures such as growth habit and leaf shape, leaf length, etc.
