Initially we only put it in the more shallow areas, thinking that they couldn't get in where the pond has straight down sides and is 3 1/2 ' deep... but they tried. They also tried to get in from the "babbling brook" that runs between our two ponds. So, we've got it around all of the edges now. You really don't notice it much, and even if you do notice it, it's not really unattractive. Hope that helps...
