I tape them only with a few pieces of duct tape and always leave the top open. When it got warm, I increased the size of the gashes on the "shoulder" of the jug to allow some circulation. Only three days ago did I take the tops off completely. I am sure I could have done it sooner. Some seedlings even grew into the handle of the jug, for instance the grass, festuca glauca.
