The material is synthetic and they probably chose the name because of it's insulating qualities. - It's more like thick woven neoprene with thinsulate and rubber grips on the fingers. I bought them primarily for fishing in cold weather but now I have other similar but thicker neoprene gloves for that purpose. ☺
