It's a favorite subject of the 20s-40s artists of Hawaii. But mostly the actual plant is portrayed as this sprawling and unkempt mass of, well yes, ugliness, I must say. Your photos tell me there's more to look into. The flower has always looked lovely and exotic to me. I just don't have room for a hedge, and that's pretty much the only way I've seen them grown. 51 years sounds about right. They were very popular around 1952. Here's Ted Mundorff's famous one. |
