Just looked at a list (hand written on torn cardboard, but it works!) at one of the mennonite orchards near us, yesterday. They have all their varieties listed and when they expect to harvest them. I'm ripening what I got yesterday, don't remember the variety. Up here, the best ones come a bit later, but these will do for a pie. LOL on the skunk. We had one get a little too comfy around the yard earlier this spring. It got the dobe twice in one week and Meeka once. H was grumbling about taking it out with the shotgun but about two weeks later I saw one that was road kill a few blocks away from the house and we've not seen or smelled our's since. I think it was the same one. Poor bee stung puppy. I had a dobie girl, years ago in Florida, that got stung on the nose. Instant geisha dog....her poor face swelled so her eyes were just tiny little slits. Full recovery, gladly. Also, we used to joke about our shepherd, Chance. He played with bees all of his life. We had a cocker and a yorkie (all three now at the bridge, waiting for me) when he joined the family. The other dogs wouldn't condescend to playing with a large gawky GS boy and he quickly found the cats weren't an option, either, so his only friends were the bees. Oddly, he never got stung. He was, hands down, the smartest (and the "sheddingest") dog I've ever lived with. This is "The President" First of the newly transplanted clems to bloom. Just put him in last month, so he looks to be a healthy and vigorous guy. This message was edited Jul 29, 2007 10:37 AM |
