On 17th March 2002, tired of struggling to plant 18 inch wide borders and failing miserably, we dug up part of the patio. (pic above) Then, we worried we weren't going to fill the 6x20ft space and it was going to look so dreadful for a couple of years.

We needn't have worried ... the concrete was laid on bare soil, not hardcore.

(pic below, 16th July 2002) This is the result of 7 years of seeds rain washed under the concrete, we've done very little planting in this border, it came up almost all on it's own. No soil improvement was made except a few handfuls of hop pellets and a digging over by yours truely.

We appear have a unique garden ... it creates itself ;)
