I am a total gardening newbie! Just moved to a farm in the country and am learning as I go. I have horses and I compost their manure. I planned a small veggie garden last fall and dumped fresh manure on the area to winter. Rototilled that into the soil this month...it was mostly composted, maybe a hair shy of done, but the soil is very good here. I covered most of it as I am in zone 4/5 and not ready to plant most things. I did seed some lettuce and carrots last week. Anyway, tonight as I was turning the water off, I noticed thousands of little worms hopping around on my garden...soil and covered areas. They are about 1 x 3 mm in size and they hop. The photo was taken at pretty high mag and was of my weed barrior (easier to see the little guys). I'm really hoping these are baby red wigglers, which I understand accompany composted manure, but I hate to start off the season with a pest, if thats what they are. As I write this, the birds are having a buffet out there...so they must be tastey. Thanks for any advice.
