I only plant Cucumbers in those Peat pellets like you can buy at the big box stores. I do this because they grow fast in those and I can transplant the whole thing right into the garden. Within 2-3 weeks I set them into the garden. So I think the key maybe on cukes is don't keep them too long. Germinate them and transplant them or just direct sow them.
