Ended up using some cedar fencing boards. They were the right height at like 1/2". Plus they had come free a few years ago.
These cedar slats don't look the nicest but this area, I figured, would be the rough, dirty bench anyways.

The redwood bench slats are sticking out some as you can see. These slats haven't been cut yet. Haven't totally decided on how to do the leg/legs yet under this bench. So haven't gotten to finish the bench slats yet.
