I have Lathyrus vernus, a dwarf which flowers early, and Papaver orientalis near which has early foliage and dies back later too after flowering. In front I have dwarf Dahlias which come up after and cover the dead foliage, with species Dahlias behind and they camouflage the dead foliage.

This pic shows a pink Lathyrus vernus, the spiky foliage behind is Eremurus, at back Papaver oreintalis and the red leaf just in view at the right is Nandina domestica pygmaea Firepower. Sandwiched between is a Hemerocallis middendorfiana.

I'll see if I can find a pic of the 'later' view.
