ferrymead wrote: That compost looks great! Nothing like compost for getting the ground into good condition for planting. We used to buy compost (bark based) to grow our Calla lily tubers in. From memory, I think it was $45 a cubic metre. When we harvested them we sold off the compost for $15 a trailer load. We now grow in untreated sawdust, which is only $2.50 a cubic metre. After harvesting we use the broken down sawdust in our home garden and we give the rest of it away free. We have no trouble in getting the paddock cleared away of the used sawdust. We grow the tubers on to size them up for our exporters, all growing well and we will begin harvesting in mid May (we are in the Southern Hemisphere.) Here is a photo of the land where they are grown. This was taken sometime in early Spring as still some trees in the background not yet in leaf. Meant to saw the sawmill is five minutes down the road but because we got so much they deliver it for us. This message was edited Jan 6, 2007 9:37 PM This message was edited Jan 6, 2007 9:40 PM |
