If you check Oregon you will see the western valley, called the Willamette Valley is also zone 8. Although Oregon is up north geographically, most of western Oregon has a very mild climate (at least in the Willamette Valley where I am) while central and eastern Oregon is much colder. That may explain why MG's grow so well here.
