TxWillie, your bird nest belongs to (I'm not joking) the Cactus Wren. A beautiful bird with a lovely song and a lively disposition.

If you're a birdwatcher, the best time to visit is late April/early May or late June-to-August. If you just want to "get away" then the best time is now. October is the "rainy" season in the park and, if enough rain falls, the wildflowers and cacti will be in full, glorious bloom. And the temps are very nice.

I highly recommend Big Bend -- for whatever you're looking for. It is a respite from everything. I can also highly recommend the Chisos Mountain Lodge and their restaurant. They don't have television or phones in the room (internet service and phones are available in the lobby), but all rooms come with a microwave, small refrigerator, and coffeemaker ... and the best view you could ever imagine! (My photo simply doesn't do it the proper justice.) The Lodge has a nice website, a quick Google search will get you there.
