The overhang traps heat which makes the area warmer than the exposed areas of the yard, and the aluminum siding of the house radiates heat at night also. It also protects the plants from rain in the winter, which wouldn't be bad if it were not for the cold nights that come at the same time. The other larger containers which are not as protected get the rain and cold though but seem to do all right for the most part.
