Donna, hibiscus really are easy to grow from seed. Here is how I do it. I use a window box and fill it with ProMix BX (peat based potting mix .. absolutely no dirt/soil) then sow the seeds just underneath the potting mix. When they put on their first set of true leaves I transplant them into its own little pot. When I see roots coming out the bottom it gets a bigger pot or put in the ground. Ever since I quit using dirt for potting up plants and starting seeds I have had much better results.

The picture below is of seeds I got in a trade last week. They were coming up 4 days after I planted them. I transplanted them into their little pots today.
